An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

I guess every man, woman, and child has overheard the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Way before the food pyramid, nutritionists, and the balanced diet, parents and teachers echoed this rhyme to persuade children to eat their fruit.

But the healing attributes of apples are actually more than simple folklore and attention-getting rhymes. Apples are a genuinely potent weapon in the battle against disease.

Apples are packed with pectin, a fiber that is added to many other fruits, including raspberries, grapes, peaches, to make jellies and jams. Apples have such a large quantity of pectin, that apple jam can be made without putting in additional amounts.

The high measures of pectin in apples add to the fruit's ability to reduce an individual's artery clogging LDL cholesterol. Holding your LDL cholesterol to a minimum is one way to ward off heart disease.

Remember that much of the pectin is located in the apple skin, so peeling the skin causes the apple to lose several of it healthful benefits.

The apple does more than just combat heart disease. It is also known to help control blood sugar levels, making it a perfect snack for diabetics. The high fiber in apples makes you feel fuller quicker, which is a good benefit for dieters. It also helps in the digestive activity.

If you are unable to brush your teeth after lunch, instead eat an apple. Eating a apple will massage the gums and help clean the teeth. It is not a replacement for a toothbrush and floss, but it is great in a squeeze.

In the grocery store, much of the apples you will find have been waxed already. The reason for this is to make them shiny and more tempting to consumers. But in actuality, all waxing does is keep in any dirt that may be on the apple under the wax.

Unwaxed apples can be found in whole food markets, organic food aisles in the supermarket and local fruit stands. Naturally, the best place to get a fresh and tasty apple is off an apple tree. If you live close to an apple orchard, think about taking the trip. It is good exercise walking among the trees, and there's nothing better than chompng into a nice juicy apple that you plucked yourself.

If eating plain raw apples gets boring, try experimenting to get new ways to have them in your diet. Slice them and put on a little peanut butter for an afternoon snack. Then for dessert, try the old American standard of apple pie.
