There are a lot of people that have never tasted an avocado. You might be one of them. Only one taste of a ripe and creamy avocado and you will love it.

The avocado is an often misunderstood fruit. For many years health professionals advised consumers to avoid the avocado and select less fatty fruits and vegetables. It is true that avocados do have a lot of fat, nearly 22 grams for a one cup serving, however, it is almost entirely monounsaturated fat.

Reports by the American Heart Association, monounsaturated fats do not increase your cholesterol level. In actuality, studies show that they may even bring down LDL levels, the harmful cholesterol, and raise HDL levels, the beneficial cholesterol . Avocados are also a great resource of potassium, which helps defend against high blood pressure, and beta carotene, a potent antioxidant. This makes them a great component to a wholesome diet.

Dieter's should not ignore the avocado. Even though they are high in calories compared to other fruits and vegetables, the avocado is also loaded with fiber. One cup helping of avocado has a very large ten grams of fiber. High-fiber foods make you sense that you are full longer so you will be less probable to eat again after a short time.

However, the health advantages of the avocado go past the vitamins and minerals kept inside. Studies indicate that if eaten along with other foods, the avocado actually assists the body to absorb more nutrients like beta carotene and lycopene. So think about adding a few avocado slices to a salad with tomatoes and carrots to take full benefit of this remarkable development.

When searching for avocados, look for one that is just slightly soft to a light squeeze. If it is hard, the avocado is not ripe yet. Place unripe avocados in a paper bag with an apple or banana and they will ripen in a short period of time.

After you have sliced up an avocado and exposed it to air, it will not be long before it starts to turn an non appetizing brown color. To stop this, sprinkle a bit of fresh lemon or lime juice on it and firmly place some plastic wrap over it.

The best way to enjoy avocados is to make guacamole. You can use it as a dip for chips or as a spread. Spreading a little on your sandwich in place of mayonnaise and this will reduce fat and calories substantially.

Some other ways to enjoy avocados are slicing them into a salad, blending them into a soup or putting them into your omelet.
