BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a naturally occurring, soil borne organism
Bacillus thuringiensis first discovered in 1911 as a predator of flour moths from the province of Thuringia, Germany.
It was first used as a commercial insecticide in France in 1938 and in the USA
in the 1950s.
More effective ones were developed in the 1960s active against larvae of
coleoptera (beetles) or diptera (small flies, mosquitoes).
Is effective in controlling insects in the larva stage only
Apply bt to the underside of the leaves of the plant because most larva feed on
the underside and bt breaksdown in sunlight
To get rid of those unwanted pests try BT Here. .
Different strains of bt controls:
1. Bt kurstaki controls tomato hornworms, European corn borer, fruitworms,
cabbageworm, cabbage looper, spring cankerworm, fall cankerworm, spruce
budworm and other caterpillar like larvae.
2. Bt san diego controls early larvae of Colorado potato beetle.
3. Bt israelensis controls mosquitos, black flies and fungus gnats.
Advantages of using bt over pesticides are:
1. Rapid control after application of bt
2. Not dangerous to humans but keep away from eyes and open wounds
3. Can be used up to harvest of the crops.
4. Non-targeted insects are not harmed.
5. If birds and other animals eat dead insects they will not be harmed.
6. Bt will not affect plants and is harmless to enviroment.
