SOIL CALCIUM

You have to have the right amount of calcium available- "Do A Soil Test First!" and treat properly.

When you are told that can't use too much lime consider that statement not true. You may have to deal with bad results from too much magnesium or calcium along with a higher pH. By example, when you increase the pH of the soil you may release phosphate and raise the amount of phosphate to the soil. But if pH goes too high the phosphate can get tied up and not benefit the soil or plants.

When the calcium level goes higher it may affect other trace elements to be tied up to where the plants cannot benefit from critical elements

If you over lime soils, pore space or the break-up of soil is increased to the point that the soil can dry out and you lose water availability.

Poultry manure, especially from laying hen operations (where calcium is supplemented to strengthen the egg shells) can be a significant source of additional calcium.

The best way to determine what is actually needed or not needed in terms of liming is to use a detailed soil analysis.

Gardeners should not determine whether lime is required simply by measuring the pH of the soil. You may tie up other nutrients by applying too much lime.

Major proven facts of Calcium
a.) Soil structure in heavy clay soil is improved.
b.) Helps crops/plants absorb nutrients more effectively.
c.) Will help connect organic matter to the clay soil.
d.) Decreases Sodium level in the soil.

Here is some of the available Calcium Sources:

  • Gypsum (calcium sulfate)- approximately 22% Calcium and 16% Sulfur.
  • Limestone(calcium carbonate)- around 36% Calcium. Can raise pH.
  • Dolomite- around 21% Calcium and 10% Magnesium.
