CHIGGERS

The tiny six-legged chiggers larvae attack campers, picnickers, hikers and homeowners. Most numerous in early summer when vegetation is heaviest.

People think chiggers burrow into the skin and suck blood but actually they place their mouthparts, in the larvae stage only, into a skin pore or hair follicle.

The bite is as irritating as any poison ivy or poison sumac.

They are so small that a magnifying glass is needed to see them.

They also feed on other animals beside humans like birds, turtles, snakes, and small mammals.

Chiggers life cycle and habits are:

  • Overwinter slightly below the soil or another protected place.
  • Females can lay up to 15 eggs per day in vegetation.
  • Eggs hatch into larvae which is the only time they attack people and animals as they pass by.
  • Once they have ate for couple of days they fall off the host and develope into nymphs that mature into adults.
  • The nymphs and adults feed on eggs of isopods and mosquitoes.

The whole life cycle is usually about 70 days with the females living up to 1 year.

Favorite spots on humans for the larvae to attach is the belt line, waist, under socks, ankles, back of knees and the groin area.

When the larvae penetrate the skin they inject a sectretion the will break down the skin cells to liquid and then this sucked up.

The welt from the feeding is similar to pimple with a white head on a red welt. This is when the itching begins and first aid should take place.

Chiggers are not known to transmit any disease in the USA.

Always wash clothing after coming in contact with chiggers with hot soapy water, cool water will leave larvae still there to attach again.

The sooner you treat a chigger bite the better the results will be.

Around your home keep the vegetation and moisture spots low.
