Building a rock garden is a low maintenance way to add some variety to your home's landscape. These gardens are especially effective for parts of your yard that are dry, but they're also quite beautiful in wetter parts of your property as well.
Constructing a rock garden isn't too challenging, as long as you design it before you start.
The first step to designing one is to pick out the area where you want to put it.
You'll also want to decide on the kinds of plants to put in the garden, and what type(s) of rocks you'd like to have as well.
Small river rocks and pebbles are splendid to use for a miniature garden bed, in most cases.
You may want to choose your rocks and pebbles based on color or regularity of size and shape.
Or you could go out and gather an assortment of interesting rocks to place into the garden design.
The most appealing gardens normally have a base rock bed of little pebbles and stones, and a mixture of plants popping up between them. And so larger, more interesting components are put into the garden as points of interest, shade areas, and to simply make the garden landscaping more attractive.
Many rock gardens, for example, have a couple of larger rocks or even boulders put in important areas to produce both interest and variety.
Setting small boulders in your garden makes it simple to add a little fountain or dribbling stream too. You'll be able to plant ferns and other interesting garden flowers around the boulders that are near the water.
As soon as you've selected the location, fully clean the area. Get rid of all weeds and the roots from previous weeds and plants, then remove anything else you don't want.
You'll be left with a reasonably ordinary dirt area, which will become your canvas on which you'll create your beautiful garden ideas.
After clearing the garden area, position your plants in this area. Different from other gardens though, a rock garden always seems to have small plants that shoot up here and there, so don't put in too many plants. And don't crowd your plants either. Merely place a few in different areas of the design.
When you have your plants in the ground, place any large boulders in their positions next. Then begin scattering your base rock or stones. Create the rock layer as thick as you want, and make sure to put the rocks near to the base of your new plants and boulders too.
The rock garden plants normally want to climb over, around, and through the rock bed that you made, so don't worry about placing the rocks too close.
Now you just need to put in any finishing touches and points of interest. You can add water components, exciting pieces of wood or even old wagon wheels if you want. It's your garden, so go ahead and express yourself!
