When gardeners discuss Japanese rock gardens, three design elements enter the conversation. Water features, rocks and plants all have their place in these gardens.
There are more elements, but you'll find that these three are the main ingredients. This article discusses the rocks and stones you can use to build your Japanese rock garden.
Big boulders can hide some unpleasant views.
If you need to hide water hoses and their connections but still have access to them, place a boulder and/or a bush in front of or around them.
If there's a part of your garden where plants don't grow well, fill that spot with rocks to make a non-plant focal point.
Use rocks and stones to enhance your water elements. Put near a pond to give the area a natural look.
A large flat stone in the area could be used as an excellent place to kneel down for a different view of the garden.
A large boulder can be used as a resting seat.
Do you need to separate portions of the garden, or to keep people out of certain areas. You can do this with stone, creating natural-looking barriers that don't interfere with your or your guest's enjoyment of the garden.
Behind the many plants you have, form a background with rocks that will help highlight your plants. Don't place rocks that are too unusual, or they may detract from the delight of the plants.
If you have an uneven property, you may need to make a stairway. Rocks make the perfect steps. Be sure not to install ones that become slippery when they're wet. You may also have to erect a wall or two on a sloped yard. Rocks are the best material for that as well.
Most Japanese gardens will have a small stream running into a central pond.
If your stream has many curves, add rocks on the curved banks to reduce erosion.
This is just one aspect of having a beautiful Japanese garden.
By planning well, taking your time and not skimping on the quality of your garden materials, your Japanese rock garden will be a joy to all who view it.
