Timberlake spotted lady beetle
If you were to see a red and black bug crawling on your window sill there is good chance it was a lady bird beetle or as some people call them lady bugs. Lady bugs are among our most beneficial insects mainly because they love to eat aphids so much. Most people hold a favorable liking to these bugs.
The beetle family to which they belong, Coccinellidae, means "little sphere". Scientist have logged approximately 4000 species around the world and roughly 350 species in North America. The species can be identified by the patterns and spots on their wing covers or spheres.
Like all beetles, the lady beetles have a life cycle with distinct egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages.
It seems to have one generation per year. The adults of the Convergent Lady Beetle will hibernate in places like ground vegetation, buildings and tree trunks. Spring is the time for the adults to leave and start their reproduction mating.
The life cycle starts with:
* deposit of the eggs
* larvae merge from the eggs after about 1 week and start eating
* pupal stage is next and only lasts 1 week
* adult stage brings on their vast appetite for aphids
* fall season they prepare to hibernate by consuming pollen a source of fat to eat overwinter
The average appetite of lady beetles is quite remarkable. One adult female may consume up to 75 aphids a day while the smaller male may consume up to 40 aphids. A larva may eat up to 350 aphids during its life span.
Most lady beetles are predatory but a few species are plant feeders and one of these, The Mexican Bean Beetle, a specie of the lady bug family, is a varmit by feeding on foliage of plants. The scale, a garden pest, came from Australia and the lady beetle there was one of its natural enemies. The scale was under control when the lady beetle was imported.
Lady beetles have a couple different means of protection
1. The lady bug's red or orange and black coloration tells birds that they would not make a very tasty meal. Birds soon learn that insects that are red, black, yellow and black usually sting or taste bad and hence they leave such insects alone.
2. Another method of protection is that the bug will play dead and the predators won't eat an insect that doesn't move
3. They may produce a foul smell from joints in their legs that may help protect.
4. The crocodile shaped larva puts on a fearsome look to other predators.
5. They will bite despite their size that may be remembered.
