Longlegged flies family: Dolichopodidae

  • They are mainly found near swamps, streams, woodlands, meadows, on foliage, tree bark and flowers of many plants.

  • The adult long legged flies are predaceous on smaller insects and are found feeding on aphids.

  • The larvae are predators, living in moist habitats such as decaying logs or moist organic soil.

  • Most are predators or scavengers on small arthropods, including mites, thrips, psocids, aphids, and other insects larvae.

  • Both Adult flies and larval stages are beneficial.

    Description:

  • They are small but colorful flies, brightly colored with metallic green, blue or copper.

  • This is a large family of flies, and species differ in their appearance and biology.

  • Their wings are either clear or dark at the wing tips.

  • Wing patterns are used to characterize identification to family.
  • Some are gray or black.

  • Long legged flies are characterized by 2 long wings and long slender legs.

    Life Cycle:

  • Larvae develop in wet to dry soil

  • Cocoons made up of soil particles cemented together.

  • The mating of the adults consists of elaborate behavior, which involves the males showing off their legs to the female.
