What to Know About Organic Grocery Shopping

organic food flickr Skycladd

If you are trying to eat more health foods, organic food may be an option. Organic grocery shopping insures better farming standards and healthier foods for your family. Take some time to think about organic grocery shopping and what it can do for you.

What quality(s) must a food have to classified as organic? At the most basic level, they are foods that have been grown in line with certain production standards. They will not have had conventional pesticides used on them, they have not been grown using artificial fertilizers or sewage sludge, and they have not had any food additives added as well. A majority of countries block farmers from using the term "organic" on their produce if it has been modified genetically. Absolutely no antibiotics or growth hormones are used on meat labeled organic.

Where can I find these foods? Your local grocery is the best place to find the foods for your family. There's the organic section. You may also find that you can take advantage of organic through shopping at your local co-op, or that you can find a community supported agriculture project, where membership will entitle you to a share of a local farm. Farmer's Markets are great local resources.

There are lots of options for healthy eating using the organic shopping. Be sure to take advantage of all options available in your local area.
