ZINC

Zinc helps with the cell growth needed for root system, forming of new leaves, for shoot growth and improved stress tolerance.

Things man has done to cause deficiency of zinc in the soil:

  • A deficiency usually will occur if heavy applications of phosphate fertilizer are added many years in a row.
  • Adding nitrogen to the soil that increases growth but depletes the availabe zinc.
  • Zinc concentrates in the top surface of the soil and when we scrap off the top soil we leave that soil barren of zinc.
  • Unless we loosen the soil we are using, zinc will be tied up.
  • Constantly taking heavy and high yield crops can deplete the soil of zinc.

Remember we need to feed the soil, especially with minerals. Get them here at
    MINERALS .

There are a number of symptoms that you see in crops that will alert you to zinc deficiencies I will use corn here for example:

    Corn

  • The weins will show yellow streaks.
  • The older leaves will have dead areas.
  • The plant will have stunted growth.
  • Silking and tasseling will take longer to develop.
  • The kernels of the corn will take on a chalky look.
  • Several portions of plant will have a red to brown color.

Symptoms of zinc deficiency in all plants may include:

  • Plants become stunted.
  • New leaves will show a light green between the veins.
  • The plant will develp smaller leaves.

Crops/plants that really depend on zinc are:

  • Onions
  • Corn
  • Citrus
  • Lima beans
  • Peas
  • Grapes
  • Hops
  • Fruit trees
  • Flax
  • Pecans
  • Pine
  • Soybeans

Plants that need zinc but not as much as those above:

  • Cotton
  • Alfalfa
  • Sorghum
  • Clovers
  • Sugar beets
  • Potatoes

Plants that are not dependent on zinc:

  • Asparagus
  • Mustard
  • Safflower
  • Carrots
  • Peppermint

Common causes of zinc deficiency are:
    1. Soils that are highly alkaline and all acid soil.
    2. Soils that are high in organic matter.
    3. Sandy soils
    4. Soils that are high in clay.
    5. Soils that are high in phosphate.
    6. Soil that stays cool and wet.

    Common properties of zinc are:
    1. Zinc is hard to dissolve
    2. Zinc does not drain through the soil well.
